I recently met up with Majesty, North Carolina’s foremost conscious gospel artist. We talked about life, faith, and a little bit of music marketing as a conscious gospel artist. He opened up about how he began his career despite some trials. We even covered a little bit how he gets his message out as a conscious gospel artist. Read the transcript of our conversation below, and be sure to give him a follow! He has a full- length album coming out on September 30th, 2022 entitled I Am Him.
[Koshiz]
Hey Maj3sty!! Happy Sunday! I just want to start off by saying: I saw about you in the news recently and your aspirations to join the BET cypher! Specifically, your focus on bringing conscious gospel rap to it. All I want to say is thank you THANK YOU, and praise be to God for putting you in a position like that. Like you said, the rap culture ain’t never heard of our kinda music before. So go out there and love the hell outta them! I’ll be praying for you (and will add your song “Involved” to my playlist too)
[Maj3sty]
Blessings and Righteousness. I appreciate you. I haven’t been added yet. But I’m doing my best to have faith, that one day I will be.
I want to show the world the gospel outside of religion. I definitely appreciate your support.
[Koshiz]
I’ve often found that people who intentionally go after a healthy way of living, whether Christian or not, often understand a lot more about God’s nature than most “Christians”. Ya know what I mean?
[Maj3sty]I do. I’ve been a Nazarite for some time now. Took my vow some years ago and the more I continue to step away from the world, man-made concepts, and what society views as acceptable or normal, I continue to see The Father in ways that I didn’t understand before.
As a people, we tend to limit Abba based off of our level of faith, understanding, perspective, and obedience. I just want to lead the world in righteousness so that they may see the Kingdom of God on earth, as it is in Heaven. The Father deserves to see that and much more.
[Koshiz]
You know the two things that happened in my life that led me to understand God’s character more than anything else?
- Getting married and
- Having a kid.
Having a bride and a child, I saw such clear reflections in the scripture of not only God’s character, but I learned what He values and how we need to live that out by honoring people and not falling short of serving them any less than they deserve.
[Maj3sty]
I appreciate you. Hopefully one day I’ll see you at one of my shows. I’ve never seen a good example of a man with a wife or a man with a child. I’m sure that will be a blessing and a lesson one day, whenever Abba decides I deserve it. I’m grateful for your transparency. You sound like a good person.
[Koshiz]
Thanks man, I appreciate that. I’m based in St. Louis, MO if you ever have a show passing through here,
let me know! I never got far pushing stuff onto people. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar, as they say. If you’d like to learn more about my mission though and what I’m up to as a fellow CHH artist, check out my website!
[Maj3sty]
I appreciate you. What is a CHH Artist?
[Koshiz]
Christian hip-hop. Some people call it gospel hip-hop or holy rap.
[Maj3sty]
Oh okay. Never been into religion or titles. But I appreciate anyone delivering The Father’s word. I’m just a man and a brother trying to deliver a message.
I don’t classify or put titles on anything that I say or do, I feel as if the people on this earth will do that enough. I try my best to stay away from religion because people can call themselves a Christian and still not believe in The Father the way that they were commanded to. The same goes for Muslims, etc.
I’m just here delivering a message before Father says that time is up for the people on this Earth. I cannot put a name on what I do or what he gives me, because my words nor anyone else’s will be descriptive or close to what he wants and needs me to do.
I do my best to stay in my lane. That has no name.
[Koshiz]
I understand! Lemme ask this though, if you did put a name on it, either Christian or whatever, do you think it would help you get your music to the right crowd, and also help the crowd identify with you more closely?
Reason I ask is because names and labels, while touchy, do help people know how to use something once they know what to call it in the first place If you got a few minutes today or tomorrow, I’d love for you to drop in on this blog post I wrote and lemme know your thoughts on it.
[Maj3sty]
I’m not able to think in that way. After everything The Father has done for me, I’ve grown to overstand that it’s not about what I want. I don’t have to think about what to call myself or classify my myself or my music, because the right ones will catch the vibe and the message.
For me personally, labeling my music wouldn’t get me in the right door, because by labeling myself and my music, I’m disobeying what The Father has told me to do and not to do. I don’t want to gain more exposure or a door and lose my soul in the process. The 12 disciples were known as the original Christians because they walked with The Messiah and spread the gospel to many nations.
By trying to label what The Father has given me, I limit what he’s able to do in my life and I limit the type of people that he will bring to my ministry.
The Father doesn’t favor religion and everyone is judged the same. So calling myself one thing to fit into one door is not conducive for my purpose.
[Koshiz]
I gotcha! As a marketing person, this conversation really does help me out a lot so I appreciate you sharing with me.
Like I said initially, I was going off of the label that Muzique.com gave you and to be honest, I figured it was a label you were trying to give a good solid reputation! I’m glad I talked with you instead of just going by the headline.
[Maj3sty]
No worries and I like your blog post a lot. It’s very in depth and informative. It shows me why there’s a small support for my music but I can still feel that there’s a big need for it, so I appreciate you for that.
Conscious Gospel is the best to describe what I’m doing. So in that respect, the headline is accurate and your thinking is accurate too. But I also want people to (understand) that you don’t have to be a Christian to receive the gospel.
[Koshiz]
Now that makes sense. And I agree. You ever heard of a concept called common grace?
[Maj3sty]
I’ve never heard of that concept. I was actually homeless some years ago and living in a car. Fast forward, I was misdiagnosed with schizophrenia and then Abba healed me from seizures.
I say that to say, any terms you may mention music or unrelated to music, I probably do not know. I’ve been through so much that I only speak on what The Father tells me and shows me. Since then, I’ve just been a Counselor and a Teacher for children in the public school system, still pursuing this ministry.
But I am intrigued. What is common grace? Indy Week featured what Abba helped me overcome has a headline story where I live now. If you read that story, you’ll probably get a better understanding of how and why I think the way I do.
[Koshiz]
Common grace basically says that God, in his…well…grace, allows everyone one, whether Jew or Christian or Gentile, to know Him and to learn his character and to receive the gospel ultimately. It’s the same reason some people say, “we don’t need religion to know what’s right and wrong.
That’s why we have philosophy.” That’s true, and people are able to come to those conclusions by common grace. The only hang up is though without Abba, those conclusions aren’t the full story.
[Maj3sty]
I’ve never heard of that but I agree with you. Abba just told me since I was young that I would give His ministry one day and show his people the Kingdom before the rapture.
Anything I say, He literally tells me and I never think of a term to correlate with it. If I do well, learn, grow, heal, level up, evolve, receive blessings, succeed, achieve or win, that’s all credited to Abba. Anything less than that is my fault. Hopefully you’ll gain a better (understanding) of me over time. I just want to deliver the gospel and change the aspect of the church before Abba calls us all home.
In whatever capacity, no matter how big or how small it is an honor to serve My Father’s people and help them within my ability.
I appreciate you bredren. Shalom Selah.
[Koshiz]
Well before we go, let me ask: what else are you working on these days, or is there anything else you’d like people to know about what you’re doing?
[Maj3sty]
I have a new album releasing on September 30th, 2022 entitled I Am Him.
[Koshiz]
That’s incredible! Congratulations! I’ll be sure to help you share that message. And I would love to keep on touch and if He wills, collab someday soon! Thank you for your time with me today. Stay blessed! I’ll be around if you need anything!
[Maj3sty]
I appreciate you. You do the same.
